UBF President Moses Muhangi Strengthens Uganda-Cuba Boxing Ties in Historic Visit
The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President Moses Muhangi is in Cuba on an official visit aimed at cementing a landmark bilateral partnership between the boxing federations of Uganda and Cuba. This collaboration is set to boost exchange programs, training camps, technical support, competitions, sports research, and professional boxing opportunities for Ugandan boxers.
The initiative, backed by both the Ugandan and Cuban governments through their diplomatic missions, is a major step toward enhancing Uganda’s boxing development by leveraging Cuba’s world-class boxing expertise.
During his visit, President Muhangi toured several boxing clubs, gyms, and one of Cuba’s historic National Boxing Schools, built in 1960, alongside the President of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca. This school has been instrumental in producing numerous Cuban world champions and Olympic gold medalists.
Cuba boasts one of the richest boxing histories in the world, consistently dominating international competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships. The country has produced legendary boxers such as Teófilo Stevenson, Félix Savón, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, whose influence in the sport is globally recognized.
President Muhangi expressed admiration for Cuba’s boxing culture and emphasized the importance of learning from the best.
“Cuba has an unmatched boxing tradition, and its structured approach to developing talent is something Uganda can greatly benefit from. By collaborating with the Cuban Boxing Federation, we aim to raise our boxing standards and prepare our athletes for the global stage,” he said.
A key highlight of the visit was high-level meetings with ambassadors instrumental in facilitating this partnership. President Muhangi met with H.E. Tania Perez, the former Cuban Ambassador to Uganda, and H.E. Elizabeth Sylvia Musazi, Uganda’s Ambassador to Cuba. Their efforts played a crucial role in formalizing the Uganda-Cuba boxing partnership, which takes effect on February 21, 2025.
“This partnership is a reflection of the strong ties between Cuba and Uganda. We are committed to supporting boxing development in both nations and providing Ugandan boxers with access to Cuba’s renowned training programs,” said H.E. Elizabeth Sylvia Musazi.
With this partnership in place, Uganda is set to benefit from:
✅ Training camps in Cuba for Ugandan boxers and coaches.
✅ Exchange programs allowing Cuban coaches to train Ugandan athletes.
✅ Increased technical support for officiating and boxing administration.
✅ Professional boxing opportunities for Ugandan fighters.
As UBF continues to push for excellence, this collaboration with Cuba is expected to revolutionize Ugandan boxing, offering athletes world-class exposure and training. With Cuba’s proven success in developing elite boxers, Uganda stands to gain unparalleled expertise and mentorship in the sport.
This historic visit marks the beginning of a new era for Ugandan boxing, as it strives to establish itself among the world’s top boxing nations.
