Governor Abiodun to Build Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Hall in Ogun, Abeokuta, Nigeria
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced plans to construct the Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Hall in honor of the state’s celebrated heavyweight boxer. This was revealed during a reception for Anthony Joshua at the Oke-Mosan Government House, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun, visibly elated by Joshua’s achievements, praised the Sagamu-born pugilist for bringing pride to Ogun State and Nigeria. He also appointed Joshua as the state’s Sports Ambassador and invited him to light the unity torch at the upcoming 2024 National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games, set to take place in May 2025.
“We are going to construct a brand-new Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Hall in a stadium here in Abeokuta to ensure you come home more frequently,” Abiodun said. “Besides this, we have decided to give you a brand-new house in Sagamu as part of our appreciation for your contributions to sports and your roots.”
The governor urged Joshua to support the state’s sports development initiatives, including organizing tournaments and mentoring young athletes. He tasked Joshua with collaborating with the Director General of the National Sports Commission and the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development to establish boxing events leading up to the Gateway Games.
In addition to the Sports Ambassador title, Governor Abiodun announced that the state has honored Anthony Joshua with the Yoruba name “Omobowale”, meaning “a child who has come home.” This gesture underscores Joshua’s strong ties to his Nigerian heritage.
Governor Abiodun also lauded Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, for his transformative work in sports development across Ogun State and Nigeria.
The Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Hall is expected to serve as a hub for training, competitions, and talent development. It reflects Ogun State’s commitment to fostering sports excellence and inspiring future champions.
